Sekisui receives global award

October 15, 2009

Sekisui Chemical Company Ltd., parent company of Sekisui S-LEC America, located in Winchester, recently sponsored the ECO Competition for the 18,000 associates world-wide.

The objective of the ECO Competition was to increase awareness of the impact on the environment as individuals, as a company and as part of the community.

Associates formed teams and competed by reducing the use of energy, reduction of waste through recycling, using eco-friendly driving techniques, participating in community eco-friendly events and providing educational and awareness programs. The activities were tracked on a global tracking sheet via the computer, which scored teams based on performance.

Prizes were awarded for the teams with the most positive impact on the environment and for original activities. Sekisui S-LEC America had two teams compete. The "SSAces" consisting of Chris Sellers, David Puckett, Jessica Snelling and Steve Shelton finished 32nd and "Going Green in the Bluegrass" consisting of Mariko Deck, Michelle Stevens, Michelle Wilson, Solomon Mullins and Valerie Schul finished ninth.

There were 128 teams, consisting of more than 1,000 associates, participating in the competition.

Local team "Going Green in the Bluegrass" was awarded "The Most Original Activity" for their two-day ECO Camp. The camp was held at Sekisui S-LEC America, and 30 children, ages 6-16 years, participated.

The children enjoyed building worm compost bins and solar pizza ovens. In addition, they had lessons on wind and solar power, water pollution, gardening, and nutrition.

Field trips included a trip to the Cooperative Extension Service, where Jennifer Howard and staff presented an afternoon of learning and a trip to Natural Bridge State Resort Park, where the children took part in lessons on maintaining natural resources and wildlife in Kentucky. As their community project, they participated in a creek clean-up at the park.

The team members would like to thank the many community services and individuals who contributed to the success of our camp, including Kmart, Kroger, Members Heritage Credit Union, CINTAS, the Cooperative Extension Service, Central Bank, Clark County Conservation District, Winchester Dairy Queen, U.S. Forestry Department, East Kentucky Power and Natural Bridge State Resort Park.
