Letter: Band is rewarding to our students

November 19, 2009

Dear Editor,

I am honored to have the opportunity to thank all the community sponsors and parents who have shown support to the Danville Admirals Marching Band.

The Danville Admirals Marching Band and Color Guard placed fifth in the state for Class 2A on Nov. 7. The directors and staff put in exorbitant hours of preparation and teaching with little rest, only to hand it off to the students at the time of each competition. There is no "coaching" from the sidelines during the show.

We, along with other bands, fought rainy Friday nights at the football games, muddy fields for the Saturday competitions, illnesses and equipment mishaps. The band went on with perseverance.

Most band parents can tell you that the great effort put forth is for the good of the whole band, not just their own child. It has proven to be a place of growth and more than rewarding for our children.

I would like to take this time to thank the parents of the Danville Band Boosters: Jeff Towns, director; Camille Towns, assistant director; Charles Ellis, percussion instructor; Ikia Daugherty, summer staff; Jack Covell, guest woodwind instructor; Vince DiMartino, guest brass instructor; and especially the Danville Admirals Marching Band and Color Guard for their diligence, loyalty, great morale and excellent performances for the 2009 marching season.

I am happy that our area can claim so many outstanding musicians from the local schools. From this comes the possibility of music scholarships and careers, or a lifelong skill to be enjoyed wherever they go. I encourage the continued community support of these fine musicians. Remember, band is a year-round activity. Concert band competitions, all-state, honor's band, solo and ensemble and festivals are all coming up for middle and high school. Watch for announcements of your local school band concerts, usually in December and in the spring. Danville and Bate coordinate their bands and choirs for a holiday concert on Dec. 15 at Danville High School's Gravely Hall Auditorium. A nice way to enjoy our local students in instrumental and choral performances — and it's free.
