December 02, 2009|By Tyler Young

You better watch out. You better not cry. Santa Claus is coming ... downtown.

The Wilmore Old Fashioned Christmas celebrates its 21st installment Saturday complete with lights, decorations, refreshments and a visit from the jolly old elf himself.

The festival is one of the county's most beloved events as hundreds of people bundle up and head to Main Street to visit with their friends and neighbors and sing Christmas carols together as a community choir.

Festivities start at 7 a.m. with the Wilmore Lions Club annual pancake breakfast at Wilmore Elementary. The breakfast is $4 a plate and $1 for preschoolers.

There will also be a model train display at the WES library from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a kids' story time at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. featuring "The Polar Express."

At 1 p.m. at the elementary school, the Wilmore Christian Ballet will perform "Christmas Joy! Eternal Joy!" a ballet featuring a mini-Nutcracker and a celebration of the birth of Jesus.

Admission is free.

A craft fair is also open all day at the Wilmore Presbyterian Church fellowship hall and open houses at several local businesses.

A silent auction follows from 4-7 p.m. in the basement of the Wilmore United Methodist Church to benefit the Wilmore/High Bridge Community Service Center. Also in the basement will be the annual Elf costume contest at 5 p.m.

The Christmas tree lights up at 5:30 p.m., and the downtown businesses open their doors, offering snacks and music for visitors needing a quick reprieve from the cold. As always, Santa is waiting at the front of Jessamine Christian Healthcare to greet the children and find out what they really want for Christmas.

Then at 8 p.m., the grand finale sends the folks into Wilmore United Methodist Church for carols led by director Ron Holz.
