Letter: Will Tamme lower seniors' property taxes?

December 03, 2009

Dear Editor,

There are lots of senior citizens in Boyle County who are on a fixed low income. Some receive food stamps as well as commodities once monthly in order to have food on their tables.

They have no children in the public schools, but they have to pay property taxes at the going rate, regardless of their below-the-poverty-line incomes.

I know Mr. Eddie Tamme, our property evaluation administrator, has other people telling him what to do, but the low-income senior citizens need a reduction in their property taxes other than the Homestead Exemption for those over 65 years of age.

Since my spouse and I are low-income senior citizens, I can speak for all of us who need our property taxes reduced. Will Mr. Tamme respond to this letter since he is up for re-election on the Democratic ticket for 2010?

Low-income senior citizens struggle on a daily basis to pay for their prescription drugs, the upkeep on their homes and many other necessities most people take for granted.
