Centre Basketball: Centre women win, men lose to Panthers

The Centre College women's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak Friday with a 74-62 win over Birmingham Southern University in Birmingham, Ala.

Sophomore Lauren Huter led three Colonels in double figures with a game-high 18 points on 7 of 8 shooting. Huter also had six rebounds and four blocks.

Senior Chelsea Goodman had 16 points with three steals, two rebounds and two assists and sophomore Maggie Prewitt added 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in 27 minutes.

Centre (3-3) jumped out 18-5 in the first five minutes and led by as much as 23 points before taking a 47-027 halftime lead. In the second half, the Colonels led by as much as 31 at 70-39.

Centre shot 54.9 percent (28 of 51), including 66.7 percent in the first half.

Birmingham Southern was held to 32.3 percent shooting (20-for-62).

Men



Birmingham Southern 53, Centre 44 — At Birmingham, Ala., the Colonels shot just 31 percent and fell to 1-4 overall with a loss to Birmingham Southern.

"When you shoot 31 percent, you give yourself very little opportunity to win the game," Centre coach Greg Mason said. "But somehow we found ourselves down just five with four minutes to play. But we had a couple of empty possessions and couldn't capitalize."

Centre was 16 of 51 from the floor, and was 3-for-19 from 3-point range.

Birmingham Southern scored the first 11 points of the game before Danny Noll's jumper with 16:38 left in the first half. Noll had another basket 1 1/2 minutes later, but Centre went nearly 5 minutes without scoring until Dee Smith's bucket made it 16-6.

Centre got within five at 23-18 with 4:39 left in the half, but the Panthers opened up a nine point halftime lead.

Kyle Binder led Centre with 10 points and had five rebounds, Noll and Smith scored eight points apiece, while Noll also had seven rebounds in the loss.
