Prep Basketball: Lady Cards suffer first loss

The George Rogers Clark girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 53-48 setback to Simon Kenton Saturday at Highlands.

Clark coach Scott True said his team "wasn't ready to play at the tip," which resulted in the poor performance.

"That's got to be my responsibility to have us ready to go," True said. "We weren't aggressive first of the game and we allowed them to get off to a really good start. They scored 19 points in the first quarter and that gave them a lot of confidence."

Adding to the slow start a poor outing from the field. Clark shot 26 percent from the field.

"We just could not get it to go down," he said. "Part of that was shot selection and part of it was Simon Kenton is a really good and solid defensive team. They don't make a lot of mistakes and they made it tough on us."

Clark (1-1) trailed by double digits going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Lady Pioneers (2-0) in the final eight minutes for the final margin.

"I was pleased (with) the fourth quarter," True said. "We could have quit and really gotten blown out, but we battled back and cut it to three. We needed a steal, a break, a missed free throw or something to tie it or possibly take the lead, but we didn't get it. It was encouraging to see us battle back, but you can't get into a hole like that against a really, good experienced team."

True said Simon Kenton's experience was the difference.

"They have three guards who have played in the state tournament the last three years and they played like it," True said.

Despite the slow start, True said the contest was a learning experience for his squad.

"We've got to learn to take the long bus ride and play in the middle of the day," he said. "The regional final this year is in the middle of the day, and it's our goal to be in that game. We've got to learn from those things."

Clark guard Preshia Rogers led the Lady Cards with 10 points, followed by Taylor Kindred with eight. Clark played without center Kayla Jones, who missed the contest because of an illness.

Next game: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. at Tates Creek.
