December 09, 2009|By Casey Castle

The West Jessamine girls' basketball team couldn't keep the momentum from their season-opening win when they traveled to Sayre for the Lady Spartan Invitational.

The Colts (1-4) dropped the opener against host Sayre (2-2) 61-25 last Wednesday.

West was unable to stop the combination of Anne MacNeil and Maddie Mitchell, who combined for 36 points. The Colts were led by Charlsea Smith's nine points and five rebounds.

The Spartans racked up 14 steals and the Colts committed 32 turnovers, while the Colts only came away with a handful of steals and Sayre turned the ball over 24 times.

Seven different Colts scored, but other than Smith no other scorer managed more than five points.

West followed the loss by dropping a 64-33 decision to Garrard County (3-0) Thursday night and then a 38-22 final to Richmond-Model (1-3) Saturday.

After going winless in the Lady Spartan Invitational, the Colts traveled to Madison Southern, where they lost their fourth straight in a 64-57 final.

The Eagles (2-1) got a 28-point effort from Tosha Boggs to key a second-half rally. The Colts had put together a 22-7 run in the second quarter to take a 35-29 lead at halftime. But Boggs and her 17 rebounds brought the Eagles back.

Southern sank a 3-point bucket at the buzzer from half court to take a 47-46 lead into the final stanza.

West regained the lead in the fourth quarter, at 52-51, but the Eagles outscored the Colts 13-5 in the final minutes to pull away.

Smith led the Colts with 24 points and Allison Rehner tossed in 12.

West will look to get off the losing streak when the Colts invade Danville (2-1) tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
