Prep Basketball: Mercer girls win Florida opener

December 18, 2009

The Mercer County girls used torrid first-half shooting Thursday to roll to a 60-19 victory over Highlands (N.C.) in their first game in the KSA Classic at Orlando, Fla.

The Titans hit eight of 12 3-point shots in the first half as they raced to a 23-4 lead that grew to 43-14 by halftime.

They finished 9 for 18 from 3-point range and 22 for 46 overall from the field.

"It's a good way to open the tournament for us," Mercer coach Chris Souder said. "We shot the ball really well."

Thirteen players scored for Mercer (3-2), led by Leah Flora with nine points and Savannah Taylor with eight.

Tori Freeman had six points and six assists and Cawood Dedman and Natalie Van Arsdall had four assists each for the Titans, who had 19 assists and 15 turnovers. Ashley Roby had a team-high seven rebounds.

The game was shortened by a Florida mercy rule that allows the clock to run continuously in the second half once a team leads by 35 points.

Mercer was to play again this morning.

Adair County 56, Danville 47 — At Danville, poor free-throw shooting doomed Danville (3-3) to a loss to Adair (4-3) in the first game of the Danville Lady Admiral Tournament.

The Lady Admirals missed 16 free throws, and they were outrebounded 37-24. Adair had 24 defensive rebounds and 13 offensive boards, while Danville had 14 and 10.

"That goes to show you that we just didn't hit our shots," Danville coach Judie Mason said.

Kasey Young led Danville with 18 points, followed by Hannah Mountjoy and Eleisha Houston with nine each. Adair committed 31 turnovers, while Danville had 22.

Danville plays Western Hills in its second tournament game tonight.

Pulaski County 74, Burgin 46 — At Burgin, Pulaski (4-3) outscored Burgin (2-3) 15-6 in the first quarter and 24-15 in the second to take a commanding lead.
