Stay safe during winter weather

From slick roads to power outages, Clark Countians could face a number of weather-related threats this season. To stay prepared, Winchester-Clark County Emergency Management has issued a press release recommending several precautions.

Individuals should maintain the following at home and work:

— a flashlight with extra batteries

— an AM/FM radio and a battery backup-powered NOAA weather radio

— extra food, water, medicine, baby supplies and pet supplies along with a can opener

— a first aid kit

— a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher

— heating fuel and an emergency heating source

If stuck inside during a winter storm, individuals should:

— Stay inside, close off unneeded rooms, stuff towels in door cracks and cover windows at night.

— Use proper ventilation and safeguards with alternative heating sources.

— Eat and drink to provide energy for body heat.

— Wear layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing.

Before traveling in winter weather, individuals should:

— Check the weather and let someone know the timetable and route.

— Keep road condition phone numbers accessible.

— Bring a winter storm survival kit.

— Maintain a near full gasoline tank.

— Avoid traveling alone.

If stranded in a vehicle, travelers should:

— Stay with the vehicle.

— Take turns sleeping.

— Stay warm by running the motor for 10 minutes every hour.

— Crack windows to prevent carbon monoxidebuildup and make sure exhaust pipe is not blocked.

— Tie a bright cloth to the antenna and turn on dome light while engine is running.

— Exercise periodically to stay warm.

— Once snow stops, raise the car hood to indicate problems.
