At a time when most places aren't putting out the "Help Wanted" signs, the U.S. Census Bureau is initiating a major recruiting effort ahead of the 2010 count.

Racheal Hampton, manager of the 14-county regional office based in Lexington, said 1,200 to 1,500 door-to-door census takers are needed. The region includes Boyle, Mercer and Garrard counties

"Those are the numbers based on the response rate from the last census," Hampton said. "We want people who know the neighborhoods they will be working in, so the idea is to hire people to work in their own communities."

Hampton said census takers in the central Kentucky region will make $13.75 an hour for work that will likely begin in April and go through June, July and possibly August.

Lincoln County residents can apply through the Somerset office and will be paid $10.75, according to the census Web site. The salaries vary based on the cost of living in different areas.

The amount of work for those who are hired for the part-time, temporary enumerator positions will depend on the number of forms that are returned in the mail, so people will actually be hired in February and March. However, the application process already has begun.

To work for the census, you must be at least 18, pass a background check and take an exam that tests basic math and sorting skills. Those who are bilingual are especially encouraged to apply.

The practice version of the test, which has 28 questions and takes about 30 minutes, can be taken online ahead of time at the census Web site.

The actual testing sessions currently are being scheduled several times a week.
