Letter: Garden Club thanks supporters

June 16, 2010

Dear Editor,

The Garden Club of Danville would like to thank the community for its outpouring of support for “Strike up the Band: A Standard Flower Show,” June 4-5 at the Community Art Center. The judges said it was one of the most beautiful they have judged and assured chairperson Sarah Wiltsee that a national award would be in our future.

“It takes a village” to produce an event, and the flower show would not have been possible without our dedicated, visionary chairperson, her committed committee chairs and their committee members working with the Danville community and businesses.

The historic venue of the CAC set the stage with the support of Mary Beth Touchstone, executive director, the CAC board of directors, staff and volunteers who assisted in greeting more than 200 visitors; Milton Reigelman, of Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts, for staging props; Vince DiMartino and Tom Poland’s musical instruments that were vital in carrying our theme, Gary Chidester and the Toy Box who provided dramatic staging props, Boy Scout Master Steve Ellis and scouts Eli, Patrick and Adam and many volunteers for setting up and dismantling the show.

All these functions were essential to showcase the 24 flower designs and more than 100 horticulture specimens provided by club members.

The Advocate Messenger’s excellent article by Jennifer Brummett and photos, along with the donated radio spots by Toy Box Catering, produced by Hersel McKinley and John Robinson, invited the public to the show.

The Hub Coffee House and Café, Community Trust Bank, Jack Bailey and Constitution Square State Park provided supplies and support such as water, coffee and a floral arrangement for raffle.

The club objective is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs; to aid in the protection of native trees, plants and birds; and to encourage civic planting, historic preservation, garden therapy and design. We welcome new members.

On behalf of the Garden Club of Danville we thank them all for their support.

Bonnie Tanner, president,
Garden Club of Danville
