The field of the 2010 Homer Profitt Invitational at Dix River County Club is almost set.

With tee time set for 8 a.m. Saturday morning, time is running out for golfers to finalize their entry into the two-day, 36-hole competition.

“Right now, we have 75 players who’ve already entered and we have others who say they are going to play,” said Jack Upchurch, Profitt tournament director. “With those others who have called, it’s about 90 total. If we can get between 100-125 people, we’ve done pretty good.”

One golfer already signed up is Shawn Tipton of Clay City, the defending Homer Profitt champion. Tipton, a former standout player at Morehead State University, claimed the 2009 title in a big way, firing an 8-under-par 63 over the final 18 holes of the tournament. Tipton, who had never played in the tournament prior to 2009, put together two strong days of play to earn the title, shooting a 10-under-par 132 (63-69) for a five-stroke victory over former champion Ben Fuqua of Danville.

Tipton and Fuqua are two of five former champions already signed up to play for another title. Six-time champion Marty Anderson of Stanford is among the 70 already entered as are Kevin Lawson of Stanton and Scott Bolin of Lancaster.

“I think we’re going to have a good field,” Upchurch said. “We’ve got these former winners who are back and then we’ve got about 17-18 people that have a 3 handicap or below. With handicaps that low, I feel like any one of them stands a good chance in the tournament and could challenge the past winners.”

The top six places out of each flight of 12 golfers will receive prizes and additional special prizes will be awarded each day per hole.

“We’re expecting it to be another good tournament,” said Upchurch. “It’s going to be a short field, but it should be very competitive.”

Prior to the start of the Homer Profitt tournament, a “Last Man Standing” Shootout will be played on the back nine of the course. On Friday at 5 p.m., five golfers from within the Dix River club and five golfers outside the club will be chosen to compete in the shootout, with a player being eliminated on each hole until only one remains.
