Letter: Bowman has narrow, prejudice views

June 24, 2010

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to the appalling and disturbing letter submitted by Roger Bowman on June 22. How dare he say many Americans have a false sense of pride in our country. Who is he to say how any American truly feels or question anyone’s patriotism? Many veterans surely do not appreciate their pride being called false.

He says that we have become a much divided society. Is this a new concept? Does he not watch the news, see the separation during elections, or recall learning about the Civil War? As much as I would like harmony in this nation, history and common sense tells us this isn’t going to happen.

What really disturbs me is the comment made about racial purity. It makes me cringe to compare anyone to Adolf Hitler, but it seems fitting.

Bowman seems to be disgusted by homosexuals and that some parents are loving their children unconditionally. People came to this great country to escape religious persecution. People wanted to choose their own paths and worship according to their beliefs. “Racially pure” people came to this country and received hospitality from the Native Americans only to claim their land and label them savages.

Mr. Bowman seems to think acceptance and loving parents have divided our society. This society has been divided since it’s inception due to our freedom that was fought for. Freedom allows us to choose — whether it be our religion, political views or sexual orientation.

Mr. Bowman and I probably do not agree on much of anything, but that’s what America is — a melting pot of differences. When these differences make us hate-filled or preoccupied with racial purity, maybe we should stop and consider if we are truly supportive of the concept of America. It’s not a perfect nation, but it’s a nation that affords us many freedoms that citizens in other countries do not have.

This nation will always be divided in a sense, and I am thankful I do not have to share Mr. Bowman’s narrow and prejudice views.
