Centre College has announced that Bob Nesmith, director of admission at the institution since 2005, is being promoted to dean of admission and student financial planning.

Nesmith will assume leadership of the Centre student recruitment effort from Carey Thompson, who has accepted the position of vice president for Enrollment and Communications and dean of admission at Rhodes College in Memphis.

Nesmith has worked in the Centre Office of Admission since 1995. He is a leader in the admission profession in Kentucky and is active in regional and national associations. Nesmith is a 1991 graduate of Centre and has pursued advanced study in English at the University of Virginia and the University of Kentucky.

Centre president John Roush said of him, “We are fortunate to have a person of Bob’s ability and experience to fill this key role. I am confident that Bob and his team will be able to sustain the remarkable momentum we have enjoyed over the last decade plus.”

Thompson came to the College in 1998 from Furman University, where he was director of admission. During his tenure at Centre, campus visits doubled and enrollment increased from 1,000 to more than 1,200. The number of students of color tripled during this period, and average ACT and other indicators of academic quality have never been higher. In addition, Thompson played a key role in initiating the Internship Plus and Extraordinary Success programs. These provide financial support to aid students in completing ambitious internships, often at significant distances from campus, and in applying to prestigious graduate and professional schools.

President Roush said of Thompson, “Carey has done a superb job in his time at Centre. Our admission effort has improved across the board, and this has contributed significantly to the growing regard in which the college is held. We appreciate Carey as a colleague and a friend and wish him all the very best.”

Nesmith will assume his new duties on Aug. 2; Thompson will begin work at Rhodes on August 16.
