Alfresco dining: Garden-side meals prove popular at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

PLEASANT HILL — The folks at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill hoped their new idea for “seed-to-table” dining would prove popular with those who enjoy fresh food in a special setting.

And so it has. The last two luncheons, set for today and July 28, are sold out. Tickets remain, however, for the Garden-Side Suppers.

“We are so pleased by the turnout for these events,” said Aimee Darnell, publicist for Shaker Village. “They are such a hit with people who like good, fresh, local food. All of the lunches are sold out. So, if you want to enjoy a unique dining experience, you need to make reservations for one of the dinners right away. Dining outside near the garden in the company of our chef is something you’ll remember for years to come.

“Eating fresh food that comes straight from the garden you’re looking at is truly a unique experience. And being outside in the fresh air makes it even more magical.”

The food for the garden-side meals is coming from Shaker Village’s three-acre garden that includes a variety of vegetables and fruits. Many of them are heirloom varieties, such as the tomatoes and beans.

“There is nothing like the flavor of freshly picked fruits and vegetables,” said Patrick Kelly, executive chef at Shaker Village. “This is every chef’s dream.”

Proceeds from this garden-side dining series will support Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the National Historic Landmark.

“In offering these garden-side lunches and suppers to our guests, we wanted to bring the Shaker traditions of history and hospitality together,” said Ralph Ward, manager of museum programs and agritourism.
