Mercer County man loses home in fire

August 27, 2010

SALVISA — A Mercer County man lost his home to fire Tuesday afternoon, according to WKYT’s website.

Jimmy Desponett, a 73-year old retired builder, says the house along McCouns Ferry Road in Salvisa went up in flames within minutes. Desponett told WKYT that the incident was even harder to grasp than getting diagnosed with cancer years ago. The fire burst into uncontrollable flames in mere minutes, Desponett said.

Fire investigators were on the scene for much of Tuesday morning to see what caused this fire. The cause has yet to be determined.

“It's hard to come home and you got nothing,” Desponett said. He said he built the house with his own hands, and has lost items in the fire that can never be replaced.

"This is a stove, a refrigerator, but it doesn't replace the pictures," says Desponett as he walked through the rubble.

He says he also lost a lamp from his grandmother, built in the 1890s.

Desponett said he plans to rebuild.
