Letters to the editor for Aug. 31

Winchester needs a skate park, not a swimming pool

To the Sun:

Let me reintroduce myself. My name is Deric Lostutter. Some know me as the Nightshade Records artist shadow who hosts the skate competitions at the Beer Cheese Festival. I have connected with hundreds of local children and their families, working with them and Win City Inc.

Nothing has been done since four to five years ago, when the first petition was passed around for a skate park in town instead of on the county outskirts. Money has been raised and presented. Even my close friends who opened Strangers Skate Shop on Main Street presented a petition to the mayor himself along with a formal letter requesting a free skate park in town for the youth. The petition held a little over 1,000 signatures.

We instead invested money in a third swimming facility. So tell me why we invest money in duplicating what we already have around town instead of growing like the towns that surround us.

I’m sure if Berea can afford it, the current tax rate in Winchester is more than ample enough to provide the safe haven for our active youth we have been calling for.

Sincerely,

Deric Lostutter

Editor’s note: No money has been “invested in a third swimming facility.” After the indoor pool was built, the Parks and Recreation Department started having community forums on whether to make the repairs necessary to reopen the Eugene Gay pool at Community Park or convert it into a “water park” with sprinklers, slides and other things for children. But it has not yet been funded or even approved. If it were, it would be an improvement of the existing pool, not a third pool.

Make the Sun’s type size bigger

To the Sun:

I realize you are trying to cut costs, but I can’t read the paper without a magnifying glass. The ink is so faint in places it’s very hard to see, and the print is so small I can hardly see it.

If you can’t take care of this, I will have no choice but to quit buying the paper. I have always had one.
