EDP Column: Learn about your community through Leadership Boyle County

August 31, 2010

Danville/Boyle County Chamber of Commerce invites residents to enroll today in Leadership Boyle County, a program that will give them a rare view of their community. The deadline for applications now has been extended to Friday.

“It is a great leadership learning opportunity, as well as a tremendous networking venue,” said Paula Fowler, executive director of the Chamber. “It doesn’t matter if you have lived here all your life or have moved here recently, participants learn about everything from education to economic development and gain great friends in the process.”

Leadership Boyle County's overall mission has been to strengthen the quality of life in our community. It was developed in 1983 by the Chamber to enhance and encourage leadership skills of present and potential leaders. Through individual initiative and group projects, the program fosters creative and multi-faceted problem-solving ability for quality improvement in the community.

This bi-annual program meets once each month from September to May. The program begins with a two-day retreat for orientation. Subsequent meetings are daylong, intensive sessions designed to expose the participants to the most important community issues.

Stephanie Fabritius of Centre College is a graduate of the program. Fabritius recommended the program to all who have an interest in learning more about their community.

“This program is a great way to get to know the county — especially aspects that you might not encounter in your day-to-day activities,” Fabritius said. “We visited such sites at Northpoint, several industrial sites, local farms, local schools, and several non-profit organizations. All of the monthly ‘field-trips’ were very valuable; they changed the way that I view my community. And that new look has been long lasting. I would especially recommend the program to those new to the Danville and Boyle County area.”

Participants are required to attend the overnight retreat Sept. 16-17.
