Judge hears whiskey bottle assault case

September 23, 2010|By Fred Petke

The victim in an alleged assault Monday said she was attacked and beaten by a couple with a whiskey bottle for no reason.

The couple told police the woman came to their house, pounded on the front door and began hitting herself in the face when they opened the door.

In the meantime, Dionne Carmen is recovering from a broken arm and other injuries while 21-year-old Roy Gross and his 25-year-old girlfriend Shannon Johnson sit in the Clark County Detention Center.

Wednesday afternoon, Gross and Johnson, both of 26 Seaboard St., pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault charges stemming from the incident in their yard.

According to Carmen’s warrant, she was walking by their home when Gross grabbed her by the hair, pulled her into the yard and began hitting her with a whiskey bottle. She said Shannon joined in, taking the bottle from Gross and hitting Carmen in the face with it as Gross punched and kicked her.

Carmen said Johnson gave the bottle back to Gross, who continued hitting her with the bottle until someone said, “Stop. You’re going to kill her,” according to the warrant.

When the police arrived, Gross reportedly hid in the house and Johnson went to a neighboring house. They were arrested later that night.

The couple, though, told police that Carmen walked through their yard and began pounding on the front door while yelling and screaming for them to come out. When they answered, they said Carmen began hitting herself in the face.

Clark District Judge Earl-Ray Neal entered an automatic not guilty plea for both Wednesday afternoon and scheduled their preliminary hearings for Sept. 29. Gross’ bond stayed at $7,500 cash, though Neal amended Johnson’s to 10 percent of $10,000 cash, given her low-risk status.
