Rachel Pingleton of Boyle County missed the cut by two strokes in her first appearance at the girls state golf tournament after shooting 89 in the first round Tuesday at Bowling Green.
Pingleton, a sophomore and the only area player in the field, made a bid on the back nine at Bowling Green Country Club to extend her stay in the 36-hole tournament. She shot 4-over-par 40 on the back side, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 49 on the front.
She had a bogey or worse on nine of her first 10 holes, but had a strong finish to her round as she birdied the par-4 16th hole, then closed out with consecutive pars.
“The experience was amazing even though Rachel missed the cut,” said Boyle coach Sandy Waters. “Her back nine was much better than the front.”
