Letter: Gay is best for mayor

October 07, 2010

Dear Editor,

I urge everyone to vote for Jamey Gay in Danville’s upcoming mayoral race.

Danville is at a crossroads, and Mr. Gay’s record shows that he knows what do to, that he will take his job seriously, and will work with energy and vigor.

Mr. Gay has a track record of accomplishment in sustaining economic health and quality of life. The opposing campaign represents a negative agenda based on complaints about ordinances, finding fault with city employees and pushing hard for a return to a government based on rewarding friends and ignoring the average taxpayer.

Mr. Gay has helped maintain tax and utility rates that attract quality growth and let citizens keep more of their money.

Public safety is non-negotiable, and he favors competitive pay and benefits for police and firefighters.

As a city commissioner, he supported the south-end fire station that maintains Danville’s insurance rating and in turn saves taxpayer money otherwise paid in premiums. He knows how to work with regional agencies to help drive improvements to our water, sewer and transportation infrastructure. His support of the Danville-Boyle County Economic Development Partnership is evidence of an even-handed approach to development that benefits everyone.

His opponent offers “fiscal responsibility,” but one must ask what verifiable evidence he has to back this claim. This campaign further represents a return to a strong mayor-commission form of government, that favors only the entrenched “good old boy,” and that will do nothing for the average taxpayer. Don’t fall for it.

Anyone can gripe; on the other hand, Jamey Gay has been fiscally responsible, and he knows that cheap isn’t always better. Leaders don’t need a uniform, but they do need a vision and a focused intent based on experience and sound judgment.

Your quality of life and safety are vital. Vote for a record that’s already set a course for Danville to be the kind of place where businesses want to operate and where people are proud to call home. Vote for Jamey Gay.
