Danville’s John Baird took third place this past weekend in the 85-over division at the National Clay Court Tennis Championships in Pinehurst, N.C.
“It’s one of the best wins I’ve ever had said,” said Baird, 85.
Baird and his partner, New Meade of Pennsylvania, beat Kentuckian Ben Moore and Robert Klein of Florida 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals before falling to No. 2 seeds 6-3, 6-3. In the third-place playoff, Baird and Meade Paul Roberts and Lee Smith of Texas 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Baird also made it to the round of 16 in the men’s singles, falling to Bob Meyerdierks 6-0, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Baird beat Robert Cage of Virginia, then fell to Fritz Dumpe 6-4, 5-7, 10-5.
