The George Rogers Clark boys soccer team didn’t go down without a fight.
The Cardinals battled host Harrison County to a pair of overtimes before falling 2-1 in the opening round of the 24th District Tournament Thursday night.
The Thorobreds (14-3-1) advance to the finals and will take on Bourbon County, which came away with a 2-0 shutout over Montgomery County in the first of two semifinal games. The two teams will meet in the finals at 7:45 p.m. Saturday night in Cynthiana.
The Cards went winless last season, but rebounded this time around under first-year coach Patrick Fitzgerald. Clark won two of its last three games of the regular season and finished with a 7-10-1 record.
Fitzgerald was pleased with his team’s performance to open the postseason.
“It was a hard-fought game,” he said. “We played very well, but it just didn’t go our way tonight. It’s a disappointing loss. We outplayed Harrison, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net late in the game and overtime.
