Sallee: I have the administrative experience to be Jessamine's jailer

October 20, 2010

To the editor:

I have worked relentless hours during this election because as a sheriff’s deputy, I know first hand the changes that need to happen at the jail and I believe in my vision for the Jessamine County Detention Center.

During this campaign, I have faced criticism from my opponent; although most accusations are not worth a response, I would like to address one issue that was mentioned several times: “lack of administrative experience.”

This is a crucial point because it is the core difference between us as candidates and will be the difference in us as jailer.

First, let me assure voters that I do have the necessary administrative experience. As a lieutenant with the Jessamine County Fire District, I supervise shifts, I handle scheduling, I have participated in grant writing, and I have implemented training programs and policies.

But I am proud to say that my public safety career has not been spent behind a desk. I’m an active law enforcement officer, and I will be an active and visible jailer, able to make the tough decisions that will move our facility forward. The work ethic and knowledge gained through my position as deputy sheriff will prove to better benefit our jail than time spent in a classroom with hours gained solely in administrative duties.

As jailer, I will bring swift change necessary to keep our jail and community safe and productive. This change includes expansion of the detention center, prosecuting those that violate the drug policy — staff members and inmates — launching of re-entry and rehabilitation programs, strong partnerships with our community leaders and professional training for the detention center deputies.

I believe we need active, hands-on leadership in order to meet the expectation level that our community expects and deserves from its detention center.

Thank your for your support, and I ask for your vote on Nov. 2.

Jon Sallee, Wilmore,

Republican candidate for Jessamine County jailer
