GRC runners win conference meet

The George Rogers Clark cross country team finished first in the conference meet at Wolfe County earlier this week.

The boys team placed first with a score of 24, followed by Powell County (49), Wolfe County (74) and Lee County with a 93.

Alex White placed first and was named conference runner of the year. White, along with teammates Grayson Brookshire, Brandon Bailey, Cody Cox and James Banks, were named to the all-conference team.

John Hinely was named freshman runner of the year, James Banks was named conference rookie of the year and Clay Dixon was presented with the conference leadership award.

In the girls varsity competition, Clark placed first with a score of 24. Powell was second (42), Lee was third (54) and Wolfe County was fourth overall.

Kate Evans placed first at the conference meet and was named conference runner of the year. Evans and teammates Genna Petrey, Destiny Hembree and Lindy Darnell made the all-conference team.

Callie Miller was named conference freshman runner of the year. Evans was presented with the conference leadership award as well as the overall Conference GPA award. A total of 23 students in

the conference were honored for maintaining a GPA of 4.0.

In the middle school competition, Conkwright Middle won both the boys and girls conference team titles. Lydia Gapp was girls conference runner of the year and Alyssa Gaunce as runner up.

St. Agatha’s Taylor Ritchie was named eighth-grade runner of the year. Ritchie also was named as the recipient of the conference leadership award. Brooke Hollon of Clark Middle was named girls conference rookie of the year.

Gapp (Conkwright), Gaunce (Conkwright), Ritchie (St. Agatha), Loran Smith (Conkwright), Emma Mork (Conkwright) and Kelsey Farmer (Clark Middle) were named to the all-conference team.

In the boys middle school competition, Drew Blevins of Conkwright was named middle school runner of the year. Local runners named to the all-conference team include Blevins, Gary Coleman, Robert Dean, Colby Birkes, Aaron Barnett and Alan Barnett.

St. Agatha won the girls sixth-grade and under competition for the girls and boys team. Julia Pohl (St. Agatha) was named runner of the year for her division. Pohl, along with Sydney Miller, Amanda Payne, Cameron Anderson, Lauren Mossaro and Claire Taylor were named to the all-conference team.

In the boys sixth-grade and under competition, St. Agatha runners David Fiske, Logan Pelphrey, Tristan Hanlin, Andrew Clark and Maxwell Clark were named to the all-conference team.

The high school runners will compete in the regional meet at Wayne County on Nov. 6.
