The well-known BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by American Maestro Keith Lockhart, will be at Centre College’s Norton Center on Thursday. The performance begins at 8 p.m.
The BBC Concert Orchestra plays for 750,000 listeners every week on their well known radio showcase, Friday Night is Music Night. It is also a central part to Radio 3’s Discovering Music series, and has recorded for television and movie soundtracks. The orchestra tackles many types of music, from big band style to Beethoven.
Lockhart is celebrating his 15th anniversary season as conductor of the Boston Pops. He is also the artistic director of the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and the festival and music director emeritus of the Utah Symphony. During the 2010-2011 season, Maestro Lockhart will lead the BBC Concert Orchestra during its tour of 15 cities in the United States and make his Atlanta Opera debut.
The orchestra’s performance at the Norton Center will feature pieces from composers Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev, Sergey Prokofiev, Igor Stravinsky and Sergey Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18 will feature award-winning piano soloist Ilya Yakushev.
