Bryon Ellis scored 18 points Saturday to lead the Centre College men to a 64-4 victory over Huntingdon and give the Colonels a sweep in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tipoff Classic at LaGrange, Ga.
Ellis earned most valuable player honors at the two-day event after scoring 27 points in the Colonels’ two wins.
Centre (3-0) scored the first 18 points of the game, holding Huntingdon (1-2) scoreless until the 11 minute, 27 mark of the first half.
The Hawks cut the margin to 10 points, but the Colonels took a 38-16 lead to the locker room at halftime and were never threatened in the second half.
“We didn’t come out with a ton of energy (Friday), but our guys today were phenomenal. The energy level was outstanding,” Centre coach Greg Mason said.
Ellis went 5 for 7 from 3-point range and 6 for 9 overall from the field, and he helped hold Huntingdon star Ephriam Hudson to six points.
“He had a great day,” Mason said.
Alex Lloyd and Collin Lopez scored 10 points each for Centre, with Lopez logging a career high. Josh Crawford had eight rebounds, and Centre outrebounded Huntingdon by 15.
The Colonels also forced 19 turnovers.
Freshman Greg Ross enjoyed a coming-out party Friday with 27 points in Centre’s 62-48 win over LaGrange. Ross was 6 for 9 from the field and 13 for 14 at the foul line.
Freshman Taylor Newsome added four points and five rebounds in his collegiate debut as he and Ross filled in for Lloyd, who played only 17 minutes due to foul trouble.
Another freshman, Donovan Whiteside, had seven points and seven rebounds.
Women
At Danville, Maggie Prewitt scored 23 points and Lauren Huter logged her first double-double of the season as Centre defeated Berry 73-60 on Saturday to take third place in the Colonels’ Country Hearth Inn/Lee’s Famous Recipe Classic.
Prewitt went 8 for 14 from the field, while Huter had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Centre (2-1). Both were named to the all-tournament team.
The Colonels led 48-34 just over 5 minutes into the second half, only to see Berry (1-1) cut the margin to four points. Centre finally put the game away with a 10-2 run, taking a 64-51 lead with 2:53 remaining.
“It was a tough win, but we finally pulled away,” Centre coach Wendie Austin-Robinson said. “We did a really nice job in the second half coming out and attacking their zone and making them go man-to-man.”
Centre was 11 for 23 in the second half after going 10 for 34 in the first.
Angela Tronzo added 11 points for the Colonels.
Huter and Prewitt struggled to a combined shooting mark of 6 for 23 on Friday in Centre’s 74-64 loss to Howard Payne.
Huter was held to 21 minutes due to foul trouble. She scored six points, while Prewitt and Chelsea Benham had 13 each.
Centre was 12 for 33 from the field in the second half, and Howard Payne, the 2008 NCAA Division III champion, was 11 for 22.
“We knew coming in it was going to be a tough game, ... but it was good experience for us,” Austin-Robinson said.
Tronzo had eight rebounds.
