The 111th annual National Audubon Society bird count will be held in the Danville area Dec. 18 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. This will be the 62nd consecutive year that Danville has participated.
Group captains from last year will contact their team members to find out if they can participate this year. Anyone who did not take part last year and would like to take part in this year’s count may call Neil or Ginny Eklund at (859) 236-8807 and, if necessary, leave a message or e-mail at nveklund@roadrunner.com by Tuesday. Newcomers are always welcome.
Membership in the Audubon Society is not required, but a participation fee of $5 is required of all participants over the age of 18. The fee helps defray the costs of compilation and publication of the international data. The international count includes provinces of Canada and some islands of the Caribbean.
Last year, the 29 participants tallied 8,008 birds representing 54 species.
The Danville count area consists of the interior of a circle extending 7.5 miles from the Boyle County Courthouse.
