  • Danvilles Carson Coulter, on top, gets a finger in the eye from Boyle Countys Hunter Sheegog during their 119 pound match Tuesday. Coulter eventually got the pin, one of seven victories for the Admirals in the match, which Boyle won 42-37. Boyle won four of the 11 matches wrestled and had three forfeits.

The final score was deceiving.
Boyle County beat Danville 42-37 Tuesday, but the Admiral won seven of the 11 matches the teams wrestled, with five coming by pin.
And that, freshman Daniel Lannum said, gives the  Admirals confidence as they head into today’s Harrison County Duals, where they’ll wrestle five matches.
“Since head-to-head we beat Boyle, and going into another (dual) tournament, it lets us say, ‘OK, knowing we beat Boyle let’s see what we can do now,’” said Lannum, who had one of those five pins. “We’ve got a bigger goal now, let’s see if we can beat another team.”
Danville coach Jeff Selby thought his team wrestled well, and likes how close the match was despite having three forfeits to the Rebels.
“We’re giving up three weights to pretty much everyone we wrestle, so you’re giving up 18 points off the bat,” he said. “And we have won some duals doing that. I still think we had a chance to win tonight, we needed to have a couple matches go the other way to get the win.”
Danville and Boyle each beat a short-handed Nelson County in Tuesday’s tri-match at Boyle, and both squads will get to see where they are in the new year.
Boyle County wrestles at the two-day Woodford County Invitational beginning today. Coach Keith Smith said this will be the first non-dual tournament his team has competed in this season, so he’s looking to see how the Rebels a more individual-based competition.
“They’re not real sure what to expect, so I’ve been telling them we have to treat it like a team dual because we get team points as you win,” he said. “The tournament we went to in Louisville (the Moore Invitational, where Boyle was second) I felt like we wrestled better than we really are. I felt the guys were coming on and we knew tonight would be a tough match.
“Danville being Danville, they will bring their best. I feel we’ve been taking a step forward each week, and haven’t taken a step backwards. I don’t know if we went forward tonight, but I don’t think we went backwards. They’ve got a don’t give up attitude, and that means a whole lot to me.”
Selby said his team will get a workout, having to squeeze in a lot of wrestling during the week thanks to weekend holidays.
“This a tough week. This is an odd year with New Year’s on a Saturday and Christmas on a Saturday. It kind of bumped us from a couple of weekend where we would wrestle,” he said.
Carson Coulter, wrestling at 119 pounds, got the Admirals off to a good start against Boyle, pinning Hunter Sheegog with 21 seconds left in the second period.
Blake Bowman (125) followed with a pin over Michael Singleton.  After a forfeit for the Rebels, Zach Cope (135) pinned Deodric Nealy and Dallin Tritapoe had a pin over Danville’s Abby Sallee at 140 pounds.
Boyle got two more forfeit wins, then Danville’s Rhodes Bell (160) pinned J.P. Robbins and Cody Kitchen (171) pinned Nick Daugherty.
At 189 pounds, Boyle’s Bryant Warnock pinned Devin Lynn in the second period, and Bryan Ferrell earned a second-period pin over the Ads’ Antonio Baca in the 215 pound match.
But Danville closed strong.
Elliot Porter defeated Tanner Abbott 5-1 in the heavyweight match, Zach Phillips (103) won in his first varsity match by scoring a 10-2 major decision over Lucas McCain, and Lannum pined Boyle’s Ean Daly with 23 seconds left in the second period at 112 pounds.
***Danville had wins from Coulter and Porter and seven forfeits and beat Nelson 54-24. Sheegog, Cope, Warnock and Abbott all had wins for the Rebels to go along with five forfeits in a 54-18 win over Nelson.
