For the fifth consecutive year, Clark Countians will have the opportunity to welcome the new year with a community prayer service.

The service begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and all Clark County residents are invited to attend.

“I think it’s beneficial and valuable to have an event in which the community of faith is allowed to pray over the community and express a general concern of faith with regard to specific issues in the community,” said Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner.

Six community leaders, including Burtner, will pray for specific issues or groups of people.

“There’s a lot of social and community issues that are addressed in a major way by the faith community,” Burtner said.

Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham will pray for elected officials, Clark County Schools Superintendent Elaine Farris will pray for the local schools, Clark County Attorney Brian Thomas will pray for the courts and law enforcement, City Commissioner Rick Beach will pray for churches, Clark County

Coroner Robert Gayheart will pray for those in need of assistance and Burtner will pray for the military.

“We call upon them (faith leaders) to assist with various community endeavors and activities, so it’s a way to express a partnership with the faith community,” Burtner said. “We feel this is a good way to begin the new year.”
