LIBERTY — The body of a Casey County man was discovered by his friends Thursday after his gun apparently accidentally discharged while he was hunting deer.
Casey County Coroner Tommy Clark was called to 249 Sharp Road, about six miles northwest of Liberty off Ky. 49, at 12:45 p.m. and later pronounced Antonio Hernandez, 19, dead from a single gunshot wound to the head.
According to Kentucky State Police, Hernandez left the residence Wednesday evening to go deer hunting and did not return home. His friends became concerned Thursday morning and began searching for him. They followed his tracks in the snow and discovered his body in a field about half a mile from his home, police said.
Sheriff Jerry Coffman said Hernandez was carrying an old .22-caliber rifle that appeared to be in bad repair but said authorities are not sure what caused the gun to discharge.
Trooper Mike Woodrum is investigating the death, but foul play is not suspected, police said.
