Wintry weather caused problems for commuters Friday morning in Jessamine County as the area, like much of the state, was blanketed with snow.

Jessamine County saw up to 3 inches in some places, and road crews were out in force in the early hours of the morning trying to clear roadways.

Dave Carlstedt, director of utilities and public works for the city of Wilmore, said his crews were out Thursday night until 11:30.

"The roads were in pretty good shape," he said. "We got back out at 6:30 this morning and put salt down at intersections, and we used about 20 tons of salt for this snow event."

The snow also forced Jessamine County schools to close Friday. The school system dismissed students early Thursday in advance of the winter storm that moved into the area.

According to the Associated Press, at least two deaths were blamed on the weather with one person dying in a wreck in Hardin County and another person dying in a wreck in Union County.

The weather created some havoc locally, according to Nicholasville police Maj. Brian Slone.

“It’s not been as much of a problem today as it was yesterday,” Slone said Friday. “Yesterday was much worse.”

Slone said the NPD worked about 12 weather-related wrecks Thursday.

He also said to only venture out if you absolutely have to.

“If you have to go out, drive slow,” he said.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the forecast for the rest of Friday calls for highs in the upper teens and a low around 10 tonight.

On Saturday, there is a 20-percent chance of snow showers with a high of 27. Snow chances continue into Sunday and Monday.
