Centre Basketball: Women Colonels take down Trinity

January 23, 2011

Paige Baechle scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench and Maggie Prewitt scored 24 points Saturday to lead the Centre College women to a 67-56 win over host Trinity.

“This was a great game down here. We came out in the first half and shot it well and Trinity got off to a slow start and did not shoot well,” said Centre coach Wendie Austin-Robinson, whose team led 34-22 at the half.

“I’m extremely proud of the kids having to come back and play back-to-back against a tough, physical Trinity team which upset DePauw on Friday night. It was a great growing opportunity for our team. We’ve got people playing key positions that are not used to playing those positions. The kids in the second half did a great job of executing the scoring report.”

Baechle was 10 of 16 from the floor, while Prewitt was 7-for-17 shooting, hitting three of eight 3-pointers and going 7 of 8 at the free throw line. She also had seven assists and three steals.

“Paige was huge for us. It was her first career triple-double and she just defended well,” Austin-Robinson said. “And Maggie had a great game.”

Lauren Huter had six points and 11 rebounds and Angela Tronzo four points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists for the Colonels (12-6, 6-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference).

“Angela was solid. She guarded their best player (Abby Dietert) and held her to nine points and made her go 2 of 13 shooting,” the Centre coach said.

“She’s probably the best defensive player in the league, and she does a great job each night.”
Centre finished 25 of 64 from the floor, hitting six of 19 3s and 11 of 16 free throws, while outrebounding Trinity (7-10, 4-5) 47-43.

Trinity was held to 28 percent shooting (17 of 61), going 6 of 19 from 3-point range and 16 of 21 at the line.

The Centre men’s game was not finished in time for publication.
