  • At 6 a.m. Thursday it was pitch black outside, but there was a beehive of activity in Harrodsburg's Mr. Kwik as Linda Rogers, behind the register far left, and manager Sue Abrams, had a busy morning, as usual.

HARRODSBURG - Mr. Kwik on South College Street in Harrodsburg has been a fixture in Mercer County for the last 38 years. Sue Abrams has been there since 1978 and has been manager for the last 27 years.

“We open 5:30 every morning and even on days like this, there’s usually a line of people waiting to get in,” Abrams said early this morning.

“Mr. Kwik will go through 10 gallons of coffee on cold mornings like this one and serve between 1,250 and 1,500 customers per day,” she said.

Abrams, who once worked from 5:30 a.m. to midnight when someone called in sick, said many early morning customers are groggy.

“Some people aren’t in a very good mood this early in the morning simply because they’re not awake," she said.

When one customer at 6 a.m. was asked why he shops at Mr. Kwik, his response was simple, “Because I’m tired, and I need a cup of coffee you {expletive}.”

“We’ve got some great customers,” says Abrams. “But you have to give some of them a chance to wake up first.”
