Rebecca Faye Smith Hopper: Wednesday, Jan. 26

Rebecca Faye Smith Hopper, the daughter of Ira Cleveland and Mae Hulda Smith, was born May 10, 1923 in Lula, Russell County, and departed this life on Jan. 26 in Russell Springs.  

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George Vance Smith; and her first husband, Eugene Smith.

She attended Lindsey Wilson College and graduated from Eastern Kentucky Teachers College with a Bachelor of Arts and the University of Kentucky with a Master of Arts. She began her 37-year career as an educator in a one-room schoolhouse in Russell County. She also taught in Fayette County, St. Louis, Mo., and ended her career in the Clark County school system as a child guidance specialist. She served as state president of Alpha Gamma State of Delta Kappa Gamma, International Society of Key Women Educators.

After retirement, Faye and her husband divided their time between their residences in Winchester and Russell Springs.

Faye is survived by her husband, David Cameron Hopper; two children, Pamela Smith Adams (Judge John Adams) of Lexington, and Gene Vance Smith (Connie Lawless Smith) of Russell Springs; and six grandchildren, Jonathan Edward Adams (Jamie Etherton Adams) of Lexington, Rebecca Adams Carmichael (Matthew Carmichael) of Nicholasville, Allison Smith Cherry, M.D. (Brent Cherry, M.D.) of Somerset, Heather Smith Dando (John Patrick Dando) of Russell Springs, Trevor Smith of Russell Springs and Megan Smith Redmon (Jason Redmon) of Russell Springs; and nine great-grandchildren, Krista D. Smith, John William Dando, Mia Smith Dando, Evan Smith Cherry, Ellen Anne Cherry, Joe Brent Cherry, Liza Mae Redmon, Ava Rose Carmichael and Cash William Carmichael.

One brother survives, Guy Meadows Smith of Boulder, Colo.

She is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Smith, Lewis and Barbara Hopper, Marion and Kris Hopper, Betty and Dale Lunsford and Mila Hoppe; a host of nieces and nephews; and a loving caregiver, Mayrene Tucker.

Faye was a member of the Russell Springs United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers are Jonathan Adams, Matthew Carmichael, Brent Cherry, John Dando, Trevor Smith and Jason Redmon. Honorary pallbearers are her nieces and nephews.

The family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Russell Springs United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 291, Russell Springs, KY 42642; the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery, Fairview Church Road, Russell Springs, KY; or to the Grant-in-Aid Scholarship Fund, Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, 3046 Montavesta Road, Lexington, KY 40502.

Donations can also be left at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. CST, Saturday, Jan. 29, with funeral services Sunday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. CST at Bernard Funeral Home, Main Street, Russell Springs, with Brother Jim Kingry officiating.  
Burial will be in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.
