Prep Basketball: Casey County, Burgin girls win

February 01, 2011

Vaughn Smith’s layup with 30 SEConds to play capped an eight-point fourth quarter rally and helped Burgin edge host West Jessamine 40-36 Monday.
Liz Marcinek went 10 of 14 at the free throw line and score 16 points and Randi Burke scored all eight of her points in the second half for the Bulldogs (7-9, 2-3 46th District).
“Liz attacked the basket all night long, and did an excellent job on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball,” coach Chris Myers said.
Burgin trailed West Jessamine (5-15, 1-4) by eight starting the fourth quarter, but Burke’s 3-pointer started the decisive rally, and Smith’s bucket put Burgin up 38-36, the Bulldogs’ first lead since the first quarter.
Casey County 59, Russell County 37 — At Liberty, the Rebels (16-4) used a big second quarter to break open a tight game and go on to rout the Lakers (15-6).
Nicole Coffman scored 23 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had five assists and Megan Pittman had 11 points, seven boards and three steals for Casey.
The Rebels led 15-13 after the first quarters, but outscored Russell 31-12 over the next two quarters to lead 46-25 heading to the fourth quarter. Casey was 19 of 45 shooting, hit 15 of 25 free throws, had 12 assists, turned the ball over just six times and outrebounded Russell 33-28.
“The second quarter, we did a good job of running our man-to-man offense and got good looks,” Casey coach Randy Salyers said. “I felt our shot selection and our passing the ball was much better.”
The Lakers were held to 27 percent shooting (10 of 36) and committed 15 turnovers, nine of those steals by Casey.
