High School Wrestling: Three Danville wrestlers earn state medals

February 19, 2011

Three Danville wrestlers earned medals Saturday in the State Wrestling Championships at Frankfort, giving the Admirals their best showing at the state tournament in nine years.

Devin Lynn finished fourth, Rhodes Bell was fifth and Daniel Lannum was sixth for Danville, meaning half of the Danville wrestlers who qualified for state left the Frankfort Convention Center with medals.

“That’s a great showing,” Danville coach Jeff Selby said.

Selby said it was the biggest medal haul for Danville since 2002. In addition, Lannum became the first Danville freshman to win a medal since 1976.

“I’m proud of them. They had a great tournament, and they just accelerated and peaked right at the right time, right when we want to,” Selby said. “I thought they even stepped it up a notch from what they did at regionals.”

Lannum and Bell reached the semifinal rounds of the 32-man brackets in their respective weight classes before losses Saturday sent them into the consolation brackets.

Lynn lost in a Friday quarterfinal in the 171-pound class, but he bounced back to win two consolation matches and earn a spot in the third-place match, where he lost a 9-5 decision to Court Mace of Ryle.

Bell, who was 1-2 at last year’s state tournament, lost a 5-3 overtime decision to Ryan Sowder of Scott County in the semifinals at 160 pounds. However, he found himself facing Scott again in the fifth-place match and earned a measure of revenge with an 8-6 victory.

Lannum advanced to the semifinals at 112 pounds by pinning his opponent in the sixth minute when he was trailing 11-4. He lost by technical fall to Brock Ervin of Union County in his semifinal at 112 pounds, then lost his first consolation-round match before Justin Lampe of St. Xavier defeated him 25-8 for fifth place.

Boyle County’s highest finisher in the tournament was Kody Wade (145 pounds), who lost a second-round match Friday but won two consolation-round matches before being eliminated.

“He had a good tournament this weekend, and I feel like he’s definitely been the leader for the team and set a standard for work ethic and things like that for all the other kids,” Boyle coach Keith Smith said.
Zack Cope (135) went 2-2 for Boyle, which qualified five wrestlers.

“I felt like it was a step forward for our program,” Smith said.
