A preseason look at area high school softball teams:

BOYLE COUNTY

Coach: Chris Lemonds
2010 record: 26-10 (lost to Danville in 45th District semifinal)
Top returnees: Cheyenne Brumbaugh, Sr. P/2B; Lindsey Edwards, Jr. SS; KK Davis, Jr. P/1B; Amy Woolum, So. OF; Heather Hasty So. C; Elyse Petrie, So. P/1B; Lauren Richards, Fr. 2B; Bethany Sholar, Jr. Util.
Key statistics: Returning pitchers Brumbaugh had a 2.35 ERA with 74 strikeouts, Davis had a 2.89 ERA with 77 strikeouts and Petrie had a 2.50 ERA with 76 strikeouts. Richards hit .393 with seven doubles, Edwards had seven doubles and scored 22 runs, Hasty had a home run and nine doubles.
Outlook: Boyle had a disappointing end to a good season last year, but the Rebels return a lot of talent, and Lemonds wants his team to remember that sting of the loss to Danville in the district semifinals. With their top three pitchers back in Brumbaugh, Davis and Petrie, as well as a few other arms that are available, Boyle should be able to overcome the loss of three valuable seniors and make a run at the regional tournament.
Coach’s comments: “We will be experimenting a lot early in the year to find out who can step up and play. We are returning about eight or nine girls who all started at one point last year so we have a little bit of experience to pick from. How well these girls accept their roles will be an important part to our success this year. We may take some lumps early on and I hate to lose any games but my goal is to get these girls playing against the best competition so that we can prepare for postseason.”

BURGIN

Coach: Brian Jackson
2010 record: 4-22 (lost to East Jessamine in 46th District semifinal)
Top returnees: Halee Jackson, Sr. SS/P; Abby Worley, Sr. P/1B.
Key statistics: Burgin scored the fewest runs in the region and allowed 12 runs per game.
Outlook: The main thing Burgin needs to do is throw strikes and limit walks, Jackson said. He likes the Bulldogs’ defense, and wants them to be able to make plays.  Burgin is again young, but does have two experienced pitchers in Jackson and Worley. How well they help the younger players improve as the season goes along is going to determine if the Bulldogs can improve on last year’s four wins.
Coach’s comments: “We all need to step up at the plate and be aggressive from 1-9 in our order. Our strengths this year will be our defense I feel confident in all of our positions defensively our areas for improvement are going to have to be at the plate and in the circle we have to limit the amount of walks and throw strikes Worley is doing a great job we just need to be consistent on a day to day basis.”
