Clark County Library prepares for summer reading program

The Clark County Public Library wants to remind local children that there are plenty of stories out there worth exploring this summer.


The annual Clark County Summer Reading Program begins May 21 with a special kick-off event. There will be games, prizes and plenty of activities for all youth ages.


The theme this year is “One World, Many Stories.”


The kick-off will be at the library from 9 a.m. to noon, with plenty of free cotton candy for participants.
Children must have a valid library card to register.


Summer Reading store hours are Mondays from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a special all-day store July 30, the last day of the program, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The program ends July 30, but children can register at any point during the summer.


Teen activities will be Mondays at 6 p.m. and include teen origami on June 6, “Sizzlin’ Shakespeare” on June 20 and teen painting on June 27. Amber Schmidt will teach teens photography skills on July 11, and teen scrapbooking will be July 25.


The library will host teen gaming the first and third Thursdays in June and July from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Gaming is for participants ages 12 to 18 only and requires a signed permission slip.


Story Time will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3 and June 24, and every Friday in July, beginning July 8. This program is for preschool children.


There will be activities at 10 a.m. every Wednesday, including “Bugs, Baboons and Story Tunes” with Tom Sieling on June 15, the Bright Star Children’s Theatre on June 29 and cartoonist Steve Harpster on July 20.


Ventriloquist Susan Pope will perform for the preschool set June 10 at 10 a.m.


The bubble truck will entertain preschoolers with bubbles of all shapes and sizes June 17 at 10 a.m.


All youth ages are invited to the Tom Sparough Space Painter show, which includes plenty of audience participation, on July 26 at 6:30 p.m. and July 27 at 10 a.m.


Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
