A Jessamine County school bus was rear-ended on South Main Street on Wednesday afternoon. No students reported injuries; the driver of a separate vehicle was taken to a Lexington hospital with minor injuries.

The accident occurred around 3 p.m. when the bus had made a stop while traveling north in the 1300 block of South Main Street. A red Toyota Corolla crashed into the back of the bus.

“The school bus was stopped right here to make a drop, and the car didn’t realize that they had stopped, hit their brakes and slammed into the back of the bus,” Nicholasville police officer Kevin Grimes said.

Bus No. 182, which was carrying 52 Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary students on their way home, was not moving when the accident took place, Grimes said. It was driven by 26-year-old William Rulon of Lancaster.

“(The driver) had his yellow caution lights on and was getting ready to open the door and let somebody out when the accident took place,” he said.

The female driver of the Corolla, 42-year-old Angela Welch of Nicholasville, was transported to Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. She did not have any passengers in the car with her.

No students on the bus reported injuries. The bus did not suffer damage and continued on its route about 45 minutes after the accident. A portion of South Main Street was closed while the investigation took place.
