The former Jessamine Hairstyling will take on a new name reflecting its history as a family business May 1 as a mother passes ownership to her daughter.

Kelly Combs is purchasing the business at 721 E. Maple St. and naming it Generations Salon. The shop was opened by Combs’ great-grandmother, Marietta Hager, in the 1930s, and it has stayed in the family through Combs’ grandmother, Vedis Reynolds, and Combs’ mother, Marilyn Welch.

“I’ve always wanted to take it over, so I just made the decision that now was the time to make some transitions,” Combs said. “It was a major decision for me to change the name, but I thought changing it and updating it was a must.”

The updating will include extended hours, as the shop will stay open into the evenings Tuesday through Friday and be open all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Combs said hairdressers may go to homes on Mondays.

While retaining Combs, Welch and 45-year veteran Mickey Houp, Generations is adding two new faces, Linda Reitz and Ashley Williams. Reitz, a hairdresser for 34 years, previously worked at the business in the early 1980s.

Combs said she will try to expand what the business offers, including makeup, facials, manicures and pedicures. Generations will also offer up-to-date hairstyling, including the Pravana Perfection SmoothOut system, a permanent relaxer without formaldehyde. Combs also plans to run specials regularly.

“We’re just going to try to do all we can, and if we don’t have it, we try to get it and work it out,” she said.

Generations will be launching a website in coming weeks where customers would be able to book appointments online and print gift certificates. For more information, call Generations Salon at 885-5971.
