Danville managed just four hits against St. Xavier ace Matt Spalding on Friday in a 7-0 loss to the No. 5 Tigers in the Fayette County/iHigh Baseball Frenzy at Bryan Station.
“St. X is the best team we’ve played this year,”¿Danville coach Paul Morse said. “Spalding is signed to go to Western Kentucky as a pitcher and position player, and he pretty much controlled the game.
“He hit 95 (miles per hour) several times and was still throwing 91 in the seventh inning. He’s definitely a good one. He mixed up his pitches, he just didn’t go with his fastball.”
Danville (22-7) only managed singles from Max Meckes, Andrew Lasure, Rhodes Bell and Hunter Terry.
“We just couldn’t put any hits together, but we had some quality at-bats, which was good to see against that quality of pitching,”¿Morse said.
Austin Baxter took the loss, allowing seven runs — but just three earned — over six innings on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
“Austin did a good job of mostly throwing strikes and mixing up his pitches,”¿Morse said.
St. X (20-8) led 3-0 before scoring four in the top of the sixth.
Bishop Brossart 11, Boyle County 3 — At Versailles, Bishop Brossart scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to blow the game open and go on to down Boyle in the Yellowjacket Invitational at Woodford County.
Kody Ross took the loss, giving up 11 runs (eight earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts and five walks in 5 1/3 innings.
It was tied 2-2 before Brossart (21-6) scored two in the third and fourth innings before breaking it open in the sixth.
Jacob Bodner, Ross and Casey Tiller all had doubles for the Rebels (19-10).
