Jessamine County Fiscal Court to name section of road after Derby winner Barbaro

The Jessamine County Fiscal Court will officially name a section of roadway that was formerly Harrodsburg Road as Barbaro Lane in honor of the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner that was a Triple Crown favorite until he fractured his leg in three places during a false start at the Preakness. The fiscal court will officially rename the section of road Aug. 1.

Three other sections of the roadway that don’t connect to the new four-lane Harrodsburg Road will also be named at that time. Those sections will be known as Almahurst Lane, Mare Haven Lane and Sunset Lane.

Barbaro Lane will run next to Springmint Farm, where Barbaro was foaled, is located, according to Jessamine County 911 Addressing Coordinator Chris Bowman.

“Barbaro was a fan favorite and a star in the horse world, and it’s natural that people here would want to honor him,” he said.

Almahurst Lane is named after Almahurst Farm, also located in Jessamine County, which produced the 1918 Kentucky Derby winner Exterminator and other numerous horse racing champions.

“The names of each of the four roads were voted on by those who live on or own property in the affected area,” Bowman said. “From an emergency services perspective, it was important for us to name these sections of roadway before they became known by informal names like ‘old Harrodsburg Road.’ If and when E-911 receives a call, we need information that is as exact as possible. Because there are several sections of road that could be called ‘old Harrodsburg Road’ and there is even an existing road, near (Ramsey Farm), by that name, it could get very confusing for dispatchers and residents. This will solve the problem before it begins.”

The Jessamine County Post Office will honor old addresses of residents and properties on the four roads for one year.

“E-911 will make the address transition as smooth as possible for residents,” Bowman said. “The residents understand that although this will present a minor inconvenience, it will be worth it, because it will help us ensure that there are no delayed responses if and when an emergency occurs.”
