A Boyle County deputy sheriff suffered minor injuries after a truck wrecked into his cruiser early this morning.

Deputy Dustin Clem walked to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center with Sheriff Marty Elliott after the collision at the intersection of Fourth and Walnut streets about 2 a.m. today, Elliott said.

Clem was traveling on Walnut Street responding to a call at Boyle County High School when the traffic light on Fourth Street turned red.

With his lights and sirens activated, he began inching through the intersection, and a white truck traveling on Fourth Street crashed into the front, passenger side of his car, Elliott said.

"It spun the vehicle around and put it on the sidewalk," he said.

After the collision, Clem told Elliott he was fine other than some soreness in his neck and knee, so Elliott escorted him to McDowell hospital.

Clem was still in the hospital when Elliott left about 4 a.m., Elliott said.

State police, who are investigating the wreck, cited the truck driver with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, Elliott said.

Elliott said Clem followed procedure by stopping, then slowly proceeding through the red light.
"Preliminarily, it looks like Dustin did everything he was supposed to do to clear a light," he said.
