Acting city mangager Bowling hurt local businesses

July 19, 2011

The public needs to know what kind of job the acting city manager is doing towards the residents, churches and businesses of Danville.

On June 15, a company from Tennessee erected a tent in Danville Manor Shopping Center, even though planning and zoning had advised them against it. This company was in direct violation of the city ordinance and totally ignored the direct order from planning and zoning.

Other tents in the area had obtained the correct permits. On June 16 at 12:30 p.m., acting city manager John Bowling called and advised me that this tent was ordered to be taken down.

But on June 22, this tent was stocked full of fireworks merchandise.
At the Danville City Commission meeting on July 11, I asked Bowling about this situation. He said a “sad lady from Tennessee" came into city hall and he felt sorry for her, so he made it a point to help get her tent open.

Well, he did help. And what did Mr. Bowling accomplish? He hurt local businesses and churches selling these fireworks because Danville dollars have gone to Tennessee.
Bowling apparently involved the city attorney to get planning and zoning to issue these permits.

The decision concerning this Tennessee company should instead have been brought to the city commission for approval.

Bowling was not only dishonest to me but also to the Danville City Commission. I don't think he really cared that there were churches selling these fireworks to raise money locally for their youth, or even local businesses such as Sun Tropic selling them.

What he has done is hurt the youth and businesses in the community he calls home. I think Bowling should step down as the acting city manager immediately, because he has already proven how much he can hurt the youth and the residents of Danville. It's time for him to go.
