Obituary: Harold McGuffey

Harold B. McGuffey, 91, of Bowling Green, died July 18, 2011.
The Lincoln County native was the son of Kelly and Susie McGuffey. He owned and operated McGuffey Insurance Agency from 1952 to 1971 in Bowling Green. He was named Kentucky’s Insurer of the year in 1963. In 1971, he was appointed Kentucky Commissioner of Insurance and served for seven years. During this interim, he was elected president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the first Kentuckian to ever receive this honor.
He was a World War II Bomber Pilot in the Army Air Force. He was an avid golfer and around the links he was known as “Ruff-Tuff McGuff.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Alan D. McGuffey and brothers, Woodrow, Roy, Lloyd and Doyle McGuffey.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Novice Cook McGuffey; a son, Harold Lee McGuffey, and his wife, Gail Wright McGuffey; a grandson, Lee McGuffey and his wife, Rachel Orth McGuffey of Salt Lake City; a granddaughter, Harper McGuffey Honan and her husband Mathew Honan of San Francisco; and a great-grandchild, Bird Harper Honan.
A memorial service will be held noon Wednesday, July 27, at State Street United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, with visitation beginning at the church at 11 a.m.
 J.C. Kirby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the College Heights Foundation at Western Kentucky University or to the State Street United Methodist Church.
