Barbara Ruth Grizzle Kidd, 82, of Winchester, died July 28, 2011 at home after an extended illness.
Barbara was born March 31, 1929, in Clarksburg, W.Va. Her parents were Richard Stacy and Lillie L Grizzle. Her only sibling, George Ernest, died at age 3 in 1935.
Barbara attended West Virginia Wesleyan College, earning a bachelor’s degree in history, and continued her education at West Virginia University, where she earned a master’s degree, also in history.
While at WVU, she met her future husband, James Reginald Kidd. They were married in December 1951 in Clarksburg, W.Va. She and Jim lived in Morgantown, W.Va., Aberdeen, Md., East Brunswick, N.J., then moved to Elizabethtown, Ky., in 1962 and subsequently to Winchester in 1973.
She was always involved in church activities, serving as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, choir member and most recently a member of the session at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester. In addition, she was active with the League of Women Voters, served on the founding board of the “latch-key after school” program in Clark County (now Kids Carnival), the Foster Care review board for Madison and Clark counties and a state-wide committee that made recommendations to the state legislature on child abuse legislation. Barbara was awarded the JC Penney Golden Rule Award for her work with the after school (Kids Carnival) program.
She is survived by two daughters and their spouses; Joanna and Russe Lindsey of Winchester and Lisa and Richard Hanna of Bessemer, Ala.; Finnish granddaughter Niina Ronkainen-Okon; two other granddaughters, Dawn Hanna and Valerie Hanna Bell; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Kidd, in 2003.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester in early October. Pastor Doug Beltzner will officiate, and there will be remarks from Ed Mesta and Ellen Marie Kratch.
Cremation arrangements have been made by Scobee Funeral Home.
