Bowling resigns as interim city manager following death threat

August 16, 2011

Former Danville Mayor and current Interim City Manager John W.D. Bowling stepped down from the position Tuesday saying he feared for his safety after a threat was made on his life.

A stunned audience at city hall listened as Mayor Bernie Hunstad read Bowling's letter of resignation following an executive session for personnel action that lasted just under an hour.

Hunstad said the threat was made early last week, but declined to comment further. Bowling said he would not comment beyond the statement in his letter to the commission.

Police Chief Jay Newell said he had just been informed of the threat, which was allegedly made by a current city employee. Because the threat was made by a city worker Newell said he would be requesting an outside agency to investigate.

The agenda for the special meeting, called early Monday morning, included only the executive session and possible action. Hunstad said the commission had discussed possible replacements for Bowling and would contact those on the list to gauge interest before calling another special meeting.

A temporary city manager has not been named.
