In one of the biggest regular-season soccer matches of the year, No. 16 West Jessamine defeated No. 3 Assumption 4-0 Monday.

“That’s the best you can play right there. That’s just flat out getting it done right there,” West coach Kevin Wright said. “... That’s how you play soccer.”

The win was the Lady Colts’ (13-5-2) third win over a top-25 team this season and second inside of a week. West beat district foe No. 13 Lexington Catholic 2-1 on Saturday.

West took advantage of its opportunies early on, which were few and far between. The Lady Colts were grossly outshot by Asssumption (14-5-1) in the first half but found the net twice.

The first goal came just seven minutes into the match as senior Jenna Bird found junior Toria Howard.

Senior Kathryn Hale struck about 12 minutes later with some fancy footwork as she worked her way around Rocket defenders before putting the ball in the goal from a few feet out.

“(This win) means a lot to us because not only did we beat a really good team, but it’s our last home game and we came out fired up because we wanted to go out with a bang,” Hale said.

With the comfortable 2-0 lead coming out of the half, West did not relent and continued to pressure Assumption. The Rockets got very few looks in the second half and suffered their first shutout of the season and only their fifth loss. Assumption also allowed a season-high four goals.

Howard scored again in the 55th minute when she got a head on a free kick by Jessica Watson and put the ball in the goal for a 3-0 lead.

“It was really exciting,” Howard said. She is third on the team in scoring this season with 12 goals. “It’s good to beat Assumption 4-0 because it’s the first shutout they’ve had so far.”

Henderson scored with 8 minutes remaining in the match. Rachel Craycraft picked up the assist on a cross to Henderson.

“I think we were in shock that we just did that,” Bird said of knocking off one of the top schools in the state.

West defeated Lexington Catholic 2-1 on Saturday with penalty kicks. Hale had the goal and Bird had the assist in regulation.

The Lady Colts will be the No. 1 seed in the 27th District tournament at Lafayette next week. West wraps up the regular season at Tates Creek on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and will play its first tournament game Tuesday.

“Heading into districts, I think we’re getting a lot of momentum built up, and we’re getting everything together at the end of the year in an important time,” senior Maddie Lockridge said. “I think this win is just going to propel us (into the games ahead).”

Editor’s note: The bracket for the 27th district tournament will be posted at www.jessaminejournal.com later this week.
