UK Basketball: Eloy Vargas says freshman Anthony Davis is already at a different level

LEXINGTON — Kentucky senior Eloy Vargas started his basketball career at Florida, played a few week with the Dominican Republic national team dominated by NBA players last summer and also participated in a SportsReach exhibition trip to China a few months ago.
Yet even Vargas isn’t quite sure how to describe freshman teammate Anthony Davis, a 6-9 forward from Chicago who makes his UK debut at Big Blue Madness tonight.
“These freshmen are all hungry. They want to come in here and be successful. That’s what it is with all of them,” Vargas said Thursday. “But Davis is just at a different level right now from everybody. He is long and will be flying over the rim and blocking shots and everything. He is really, really good.”
How good?
“He will help us a lot because he blocks a lot of shots with his wingspan and long arms. He can jump out of the gym, too. He will help so much on defense,” Vargas said.
“Everybody gets along with him, too. He is kind of a funny dude, but he knows how to play basketball. He’s going to be a lot of fun for fans to watch.”
Vargas says Davis and freshmen Kyle Wiltjer, Marquis Teague and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist all fit in perfectly with UK’s returning players, as does transfer Ryan Harrow.
“We are our brother’s keeper. We like living together. We hang out with each other on campus, go out to eat,” Vargas said. “We never fight. On the basketball court we do, but out of here we are like brothers. It is better because for the team because we are all together and all on the same page all the time.”
